My Herpes Journey

I have been living with the herpes type 2 diagnosis for about 8 years and recently ended a long term relationship. When I thought about the prospect of finding a new partner, the anxiety of having to disclose this information weighed very heavily on my mind and heart. And as anyone who has this infection knows, the thought of having to have “the” conversation can bring up anxiety. A few months ago, I met a man who I feel deeply in love with and have begun to get
to know through Skype and email, as he lives in Europe. When things began to progress and it became clear that he was planning a visit, I immediately went in to a low grade panic. I had not been faced with the need to share this conversation in quite some time and all the old patterns of shame and guilt and feeling dirty surfaced with a vengeance.

I could not see how I would be able to disclose my secret without bringing all of those negative feelings into the conversation and I became even more stressed about it.

That is when I called Christopher. I explained the situation and immediately booked a phone session and to inquire about purchasing his sex gel. I knew that I would make the purchase and that I had to have the conversation at some point. I had devise a plan as to how I would have my reveal conversation, but the main problem was that my plan was laced with all the shame, guilt and dirtiness that I was carrying. I explained to Christopher what I intended to say and how I would go about it. I was prepared to send website links, answer any questions that might come up, all the while feel very small inside. Because I was prepared to be honest with my new partner I knew Christopher would be willing to provide his gel, but what I did not anticipate was that he would also be willing to coach me through the conversation.

He lovingly spent the time necessary to role play the conversation with me and gave me many specific ways to present the information. I could literally feel my dread leaving me and a sense of empowerment come over me.

As Christopher suggested, I patiently waited for the moment in which the flow of conversation with my new partner turned towards sex and the practical reality of protection and STDs. As the conversation was building, I knew my opportunity had arrived and I dug deep within in own heart to find the courage that I needed. I knew that I wanted to present the information from a place of strength and not weakness and that is just what I did. I shared that I had recently been tested for STDs, all of which were negative but that I had been living with a positive herpes type 2 diagnosis for the last 8 years. My partner was such a gentleman and even shared that he had type1 herpes. As he is from Europe, and was not familiar with the sexually transmitted type 2 I did explained the situation and calmly answered his questions with my head held high.

If not for the conversation with Christopher, I would have been a nervous wreck and I would have felt like I had to give a tutorial about the virus and all the implications and risk factor and it would have been a very different conversation.

And the subsequent results would have been that I suffered from my own self-judgments for days if not weeks after. As is was, I presented the facts and my new partner and I had a very adult conversation about the potential for our new sexual relationship with honesty, love and respect.

When I found Christopher 8 years ago, with the help of his book and his coaching, and now recently, I feel like I have an ally in my corner who not only knows what it’s like to live with this infection, but who cares about the emotional lives of his clients. His help and support have been invaluable to allow me to hold my head high and still believe in the beauty of my dreams to have a loving partner and beautiful life despite the facts of my diagnosis. Because, I also know that within a loving relationship, I will find even deeper healing for any remaining shame and guilt. And that a healthy sex life within a healthy adult relationship is where the true magic happens.

I encourage anyone reading who is also facing the daunting task of revealing a part of your own story, please work through the shame and guilt and understand that this diagnosis does not define you. You are so much more brilliant, beautiful and deserving of love than any one virus could take from you.

Roasted Garlic and Cilantro Soup.

Two of my favourite things, together at last!

5-6 bulbs of garlic

6-8 med size potatoes

6 cups of water

2  red onions sliced

2 carrots chopped

1-2 tsp of sea salt

1-2 tsp of pepper

2 cups of Cilantro chopped

Bake the garlic bulbs at 400 degrees by cutting the tips off the garlic bulbs, drizzling some olive oil over top and baking for about 30 minutes.

Asian Salmon

1/3 cup of Maple syrup

1/3 cup Soy Sauce

2 tbsp of Hoisin sauce

2 tbsp peeled and sliced ginger

Dried red pepper flakes

3-5 gloves of chopped garlic

Juice of 1or 2 fresh limes

2-4 Wild Salmon fillets

Place the sugar, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, ginger, lime juice, red pepper flakes, garlic in a saucepan, bringing the mixture to a boil.  Reduce the heat to medium, and cook for 15 to 20 minutes or until the sauce forms a glaze.

Preheat the broiler.

Place the salmon fillets on a broiler pan and cover with the 1/3 of the sauce. Let sit for 15 minutes. Broil them until cooked through, about 8 minutes, and again baste more of the asian mixture. Remove the salmon from the heat and baste once more with the sauce before serving.  Great by itself or served with basmati rice!

I will also cut it into small pieces and snack on it throughout the day.

Bok Bok Mushrooms

Bok choy and shiitake mushrooms are a natural combination for a quick stir-fry because….

1-2 tbsp olive oil

3-5 cloves garlic, chopped

1 or 2 bok choy heads, trimmed and thinly sliced

4 cups sliced shiitake mushroom caps

2 tbsp of oyster sauce

1 tbsp of sesame oil

1 tsp of sea salt

2-3 tbsp of hemp seeds (optional to sprinkle overtop)

If you have a wok, great!  This is the time to use it.  If not just use a fry pan.  Heat oil over medium-high heat. Add garlic and cook, stirring constantly, until fragrant but not browned, about 30-60 seconds. Add bok choy and mushrooms. Cook and stir until wilted, about 2 minutes. Continue cooking, stirring often, until just tender, 3 to 5 minutes more. Stir in oyster sauce, sesame oil and salt. Serve hot with hemp seeds sprinkled overtop.
