Most of what you read online about COVID-19 and herpes either hides the link or tries to sell you something on the back of it. I am not going to do either.
Let me be clear. COVID-19 can wake up a dormant herpes virus. You do not have to squint at the numbers to see it, and it is not some fringe theory. Among people who become seriously ill with COVID-19, herpes simplex reactivation is common and well documented — across hospitalised patients with severe or critical illness, the combined figure sits at around 38 per cent.
Read that line again, because precision matters here. That figure comes from people who are severely ill. A heavy viral infection puts a massive load on your internal environment. When your body is under that kind of strain, a dormant virus that has been sitting quietly in the background sees its opening and takes it. That is how viruses behave. They wait for your system to be occupied elsewhere.
What I am not claiming
I am not telling you that every passing sniffle will trigger an outbreak. And I am not telling you that the COVID-19 vaccine causes herpes flares. Yes, people have reported herpes outbreaks after vaccination, and those accounts exist in the literature — as reports. Two things happening one after the other is an observation, not proof that one caused the other, and I will not pretend otherwise.
There is a world of difference between saying “this is documented in severely ill hospital patients”, “this is a preliminary signal worth keeping an eye on”, and “this is a proven cause”. Most writing on the internet blurs all three into one loud claim. Honest work keeps them separate.
What that means for you
If you live with herpes and you catch COVID-19, you are not helpless, and you are not guaranteed to have an outbreak. What you are is a person whose immune system is suddenly very busy.
That calls for the same unglamorous basics that keep your body in balance the rest of the year. Sleep. Fluids. Good food.
Nobody else on earth carries this virus in quite the same way you do. Asking “will COVID give me an outbreak?” in the abstract is the wrong question. The real question is how your body has responded to heavy stress in the past — and what you are willing to do differently to support yourself this time.
